English 1 1st semester Solution

1st sem New Syllabus

No need to write reason .

vi. Complete the sentences with appropriate clause:

a. If it hadn’t rained, more people would have come.
→ Reason: This is a third conditional sentence (imaginary past), so it needs “would have + past participle.”

b. If you work hard, you will succeed.
→ Reason: This is a first conditional (real future possibility), so it uses “will + base verb.”

vii. Select the correct word in sentences:

a. There was insufficient evidence to convict the accused of the crime.
→ Reason: “Evidence” fits better than “accurate” here because you convict based on proof, not on accuracy.

b. The newly formed country gained its independence only last year.
→ Reason: A newly formed country would gain “independence,” not “ambition.”

viii. Complete sentences with the correct form of the verb:

a. If you feel that I’m being unreasonable, please say so.
→ Reason: “Feel” is simple present because it talks about a current, general feeling.

b. Sandra was smelling the blossom on her cherry tree when she was sitting by the tree.
→ Reason: Past continuous (“was smelling”) is used to describe an action happening at that moment.

ix. Complete the sentences with the correct preposition and gerund:

a. I’m not very keen on swimming when the sea is this rough but I’ll come if you insist.
→ Reason: “Keen” is always followed by “on + gerund.”

b. Are you looking forward to finishing school and getting a job?
→ Reason: “Look forward to” must be followed by a gerund (verb+ing).

x. Use appropriate word to complete the following inversions:

a. Rarely have anyone witnessed such an amazing sight as view from space.
→ Reason: After negative adverbs like “rarely,” we invert: “Rarely + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb.” (Present perfect → “have witnessed.”)

b. At no time should you leave your luggage unattended at the airport.
→ Reason: “At no time” triggers inversion with “should” for commands/rules.

6. Give advice using “have/get something done”:

(a) Water has been coming in through your parents’ bedroom ceiling.
➡️ You should have the ceiling repaired.
(Reason: “Have something done” for someone fixing it for you.)

(b) I bought a pair of trousers but they’re too long for me.
➡️ You should get the trousers shortened.
(Reason: You get a tailor to shorten them.)

(c) Your pet dog has lost his appetite recently.
➡️ You should have your dog checked by a vet.
(Reason: You arrange a vet check-up.)

(d) I want to sell my house but it’s looking a bit shabby.
➡️ You should get your house renovated.
(Reason: You hire someone to improve its appearance.)

(e) Your sister’s car has been making strange noise.
➡️ She should have her car serviced.
(Reason: “Serviced” by a mechanic to fix the noise.)

7. Complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb:

(a) She traveled with two crew members.
(Simple past because it already happened.)

(b) She said she had had this dream since childhood.
(Past perfect after “said” because it’s a dream from even earlier.)

(c) Anousheh is from Iran.
(Simple present because it’s a fact.)

(d) She hopes that she will inspire a new generation of women.
(Future form after “hopes that.”)

(e) NASA plans further shuttle and rocket next year.
(Simple present for future events planned officially.)

8. Complete the expressions with appropriate modal verbs:

(a) It must be one of the biggest shops in the world.
(“Must” shows strong certainty.)

(b) You could spend days in here.
(“Could” shows possibility.)

(c) It can be a real problem.
(“Can” shows something possible.)

(d) You must have left your job. You look desperate.
(“Must have” for a logical conclusion about a past event.)

(e) The first-time visitors to Japan will be amazed at the level of service.
(“Will” for prediction or certainty.)
